For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’ refers to Unit, ‘Service’ refers to the website and mobile applications operated by Unit and ‘you’ and ‘user’ refers to you, the user of the Services.
This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use and disclosure of personal data when you use our Service.
We will not use or share your data with anyone except as described in this Privacy Policy.
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you don’t agree with this policy, you do not have permission to access the Service.
Unit is built to be private by design. Your notes and everything you create stay on your device, and if you turn on sync, they live in your own private iCloud - not on our servers. We only collect and use the small amount of personal data needed to run and improve our services, and we only keep it for as long as that requires.
This Privacy Policy forms part of our Terms of Service, which describes the terms under which you use our Services and which are available at https://unit.app/terms. This Privacy Policy should therefore be read in conjunction with those terms.
Unit does not require an account. You can download the app and start using it right away - no sign-up, no email, no password. We only collect your email if you contact our support team or sign up for our newsletter on this website. If you used an older version of Unit, you can optionally sign in to import your data from Unit Cloud - that sign-in is used only for the import.
Your content - your notes, tasks, images, audio, files and everything else you create in Unit - stays on your device. If you turn on sync, it is also stored in your own private iCloud, where it is encrypted by Apple in transit and at rest. Your content never reaches our servers: we cannot read it, export it, or delete it. If you keep sync turned off, your content simply never leaves your device.
Unit can automatically keep recent backups of your notes and files right on your device, so you can roll back to an earlier version. These backups stay on your device - we don’t upload or access them. They may be included in your own device or iCloud backup, depending on your iOS settings.
To understand how Unit is used and to fix problems, we collect a small amount of anonymous usage and diagnostic data - for example, which features are opened or whether the app runs into an error, along with a device identifier. This never includes the content of your notes.
Unit Plus is purchased through Apple’s App Store. Apple handles the payment and billing - we never see or store your payment details. On your device, the app simply checks whether your subscription or Lifetime purchase is active.
Our diagnostic and analytics tools, and our website, may record basic technical information such as device type, operating system version, app version and, on the web, browser type and IP address. We use this to diagnose issues and improve Unit. It is never linked to the content of your notes.
The only cookies we use are those to operate and provide our Services on the web. We do not use cookies for profiling or advertising. The cookies we use are small text files that allow us to provide and customize our Services, and in doing so provide you with an enhanced user experience. Your browser lets you control these cookies, including whether to accept them and how to remove them.
Unit relies on a few trusted services to work. Syncing and storing your content happen through Apple iCloud (CloudKit), and purchases go through the Apple App Store - both are provided by Apple under Apple’s own privacy policy, and your content stays within your private iCloud. For the diagnostic and analytics data described above, we use Sentry (crash and diagnostic reports) and Amplitude and PostHog (anonymous usage analytics). These providers process that limited data on our behalf under their own privacy policies.
Because your notes and content live on your own device and in your private iCloud, they are protected by your device and by Apple, who encrypts them in transit and at rest - we have no access to them.
For the limited data we do handle, the security of your information is important to us, and we strive to implement and maintain reasonable, commercially acceptable security procedures and practices appropriate to the nature of the information we store, in order to protect it from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure.
However, please be aware that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure and we are unable to guarantee the absolute security of the Personal Information we have collected from you.
Your content is in your hands. Because it lives on your device and in your iCloud, you can delete any note in the app, turn off sync, or remove Unit’s data from iCloud in your iOS settings at any time - we have no copy to delete for you. There is no account to close.
If you used Unit Cloud and would like the data from our old servers deleted before it is retired, or if you’d like us to remove the limited diagnostic and analytics data linked to your device, just email us at support@unit.app and we’ll take care of it.
We may use your Personal Information to contact you with newsletters or marketing materials and other information that may be of interest to you. You may opt out of receiving any, or all, of these communications from us by following the unsubscribe link or instructions provided in any email we send or by contacting us.
From time to time, we may provide you with links to third party websites or services that we do not own or control. Your use of the Service may also include the use of applications that are developed or owned by a third party.
Your use of such third party applications, websites, and services is governed by that party’s own terms of service or privacy policies. We encourage you to read the terms and conditions and privacy policy of any third party application, website or service that you visit or use.
You acknowledge and agree that Unit shall not be responsible or liable, directly or indirectly, for any damage or loss caused or alleged to be caused by or in connection with use of or reliance on any such content, goods or services available on or through any such third party web sites or services.
Unit is not directed to children. We will not knowingly collect personal information relating to children under 13 years of age, and if we learn that we have inadvertently done so, we will promptly delete it.
We will disclose your Personal Information where required to do so by law or subpoena or if we believe that such action is necessary to comply with the law and the reasonable requests of law enforcement or to protect the security or integrity of our Service.
Your content is not transferred to us - it stays on your device and in your private iCloud, handled by Apple. The limited diagnostic and analytics data described above may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. By using the Service, you consent to that processing.
Unit reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify or replace the Privacy Policy at any time. If the alterations constitute a material change, Unit will notify you by posting an announcement on the Unit website. What constitutes a material change will be determined at Unit’s sole discretion. You shall be responsible for reviewing and becoming familiar with any such modifications. Using our Services following notification of a material change to this Privacy Policy shall constitute your acceptance of the Policy as modified.
